I engage in ongoing clinical professional development, clinical supervision and my own personal therapy as part of my ethical and professional commitments.

My name is Leanne, the face behind Beyond the Couch Therapy. Originally from Scotland, I now live in Australia, where I have come to feel at home.

My path into counselling and psychotherapy has unfolded over many years working in healthcare, shaped by both professional and personal experience. My work in midwifery was especially formative. Being present with women during pregnancy and birth, and witnessing moments of profound vulnerability, strength, and change, deeply influenced how I came to this work.

Through this experience, I became increasingly aware of the emotional and relational layers held within these moments, as well as the ways complex healthcare systems can shape how experiences are supported, expressed, or left fragmented. I witnessed moments of deep connection and, at times, how systemic pressures shaped the experiences of women, their families, and the professionals working alongside them. These observations sparked a lasting curiosity about how people adapt within complex relational and systemic contexts, and how those adaptations can continue to shape their lives.

Over time, I was drawn to work that allows space to be present with what unfolds in a person’s life, supporting them to understand and integrate their experiences. Counselling and psychotherapy offer this space, grounded in presence, relational depth, curiosity, empathy, collaboration, and respect, values that align with the care I aim to offer.
